Family History

Potgieter is a Dutch occupational surname meaning 'pot-caster' or 'pewterer' — a craftsman who cast metal vessels. The surname arrived at the Cape Colony in the eighteenth century with Dutch settlers recruited by the VOC, and became firmly established in the Afrikaner community of the Western Cape and later the interior.

The Potgieter family's historical significance lies primarily in the generation of the Great Trek — the mass migration of Afrikaner farmers (Voortrekkers) from the Cape Colony into the South African interior during the 1830s and 1840s. The Voortrekkers sought to escape British authority following the British takeover of the Cape Colony and objected to the abolition of slavery in 1834.

Hendrik Potgieter was one of the three major Voortrekker leaders alongside Piet Retief and Gert Maritz. Potgieter led a significant contingent of trekkers into the Transvaal region, crossing the Vaal River and establishing the first Voortrekker settlements in what became the South African Republic. He founded the town of Potchefstroom in 1838 — one of the oldest planned towns in South Africa north of the Orange River — and later established Ohrigstad in the Lowveld.

Potgieter is also remembered for the punitive expeditions against the Matabele king Mzilikazi, whom the Voortrekkers blamed for raids on their cattle and settlements. The battle of Kapain (Mosega) in 1837 and subsequent engagements drove Mzilikazi northward across the Limpopo River into what became Matabeleland (modern Zimbabwe).
